Heroes in a half shell, Turtle Power!

My boys are really into the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles right now. So when Eli’s school sent out a note asking for cake donations for a cake walk at his upcoming school carnival, I figured I’d bring out the old cake pans and practice up! I had to make sure I could still do it. My mom gave me my old cake pans a few years back on a trip home, so I decided to bring out my trusty 30-year-old TMNT cake head! I bet my brothers remember this one, I probably made 50 of them when I was little.

This one was a bit different than what I’m used to, though. I typically work with decorating tips, but I decided to try my hand at fondant. So this was my first real time making and using fondant on a full cake. I tried marshmallow fondant, I heard this was a bit tastier than regular fondant, although I still didn’t think it was that great. I had to invest in a fondant rolling pin, cutter and mat. I’m glad I did, they worked perfectly and I was pretty thrilled with the end result.

I use boxed cakes, because they’re easy and only $1 at Walmart! I like the taste, I’m sure most people would prefer a freshly baked homemade cake. I used two boxes of vanilla (yes, Mr. Christian Grey, I love vanilla! Wink Wink, Dona Prindle), and made a double-layer cake. For each cake, I leveled it out using my leveler. Then I did a crumb coat with store-bought frosting because it just tastes so good (my taste buds aren’t very sophisticated). I followed the recipe from the Cake Boss to make and use marshmallow fondant. I was pretty proud of myself, so I stamped a CONGRATULATIONS decorating stamp in to my finished fondant product. I rolled little balls for the border because I didn’t want to invest in more random tools if I didn’t like to use the fondant. See pic below, I caught Noli filling up his dump trucks with them about 10 minutes after I finished it, so darn cute, this kept him busy for about an hour!

The test cake turned out great. And the finished product for the carnival was…CUPCAKES from My Dream Cupcake. I had a bit of a crazy week at work, so I had to buy cupcakes :( Oh well, I’m certain they tasted better than my boxed cake did.
